Han pasado tres años desde la ultima vez que mi alter ego drag, Consuelo Ciskar hizo una aparición pública, pero con noticias sobre la verdadera Ciscar y su caso judicial apareciendo a diario (ella está bajo investigación por corrupción, el pago excesivo por obras de arte, etc, mientras era directora de IVAM) era quizá inevitable que ella formaría parte este año de las Fallas, el festival de fuego valenciano. Descubrí su ninot (una escultura, generalmente de una persona, animal o carácter) en un monumento fallero realmente extraño en Arrancapins. La mayoría de las Fallas parecen hechas por Walt Disney en ácido y apestan cuando se queman, ya que están hechas de poliestireno, pero hay algunas asociaciones de Fallas alternativas que utilizan materiales tradicionales y evitan el exceso. Arrancapins es uno de esas y de hecho los fallerxs allí diseñan y construyen la escultura ellxs mismos (la mayoría de los falleros pagan a grandes empresas que se encargan de hacer todo el trabajo por ellos) así que fue un gran placer encontrar a mi vieja compañera Consuelo alli. Corrí a casa para prepararme y rodar con ella, ya que sólo quedaba un día antes de la cremà, cuando según la tradición, se quema todo en una orgía frenética de fuegos artificiales y queroseno.

It´s been three years since my drag persona Consuelo Ciskar last made a pùblic appearance but with news about the real Ciscar and her court case appearing daily (she is under investigation for insider dealing, the overpayment of artworks, etc while she was director of IVAM) it was perhaps inevitable that she would form part of this years Fallas, the Valencian fire festival. I discovered her ninot (a sculpture, usually of a person, animal or character) forming part of a really bizarre Fallas monument in Arrancapins.
Most Fallas look like Walt Disney on acid and stink to high heaven when they burn as they are made of polystyrene, but there are some alternative Fallas associations which use traditional materials and avoid the overblown. Arrancapins is one and in fact the falleros there design and build the sculpture themselves (most fallas pay big companies to do all the work for them) so it was a great pleasure to find my old sparring partner Consuelo there. I rushed home to prepare and film with her as there was only one day left until she was to be burned, as per tradition, in a frenzied orgy of fireworks and kerosene on the climactic final night of the festival.
